Obviously, you have found Osteen Organics because of your interest in raising Tilapia.

You are probably like me wanting to start off something small in your backyard and then, if you like it, grow sensibly into a commercial farm.

And that’s exactly what we did!

The first thing that I found in researching this industry was confusing Mis-information.

So let me clear the air for you on some things:

  • In most of Florida you do not need a permit for Blue tilapia, just any Tilapia other than Blue. Refer to Fl. Statute 68-5.002 for conditional non-native species.
  • You do not need an all male stock. Our females in some cases will outgrow the males. What makes a Tilapia grow is good genes, oxygen, warm water, and a good diet.
  • They say you cannot grow different size fish together, but we do and have great results.
  • Tilapia fry whose mother broods them are healthier than ones that grow in an incubator.

Never purchase fish from a breeder unless you can see the parents. It’s just like a dog.

If you breed the pick of the litter with the pick of the litter, you get quality dogs.If you breed a runt with a runt, you get runts.

What is in their ponds?
